The United Nations Rights Office urges detention in Kenya while new demonstrations become fatal

The spokesperson for the Ravina Shamdasani office cited Kenyan police reports at least 11 deaths, 52 injured police officers and 567 arrests. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights reported slightly different figures: at least 10 deaths, 29 injuries, 37 arrests and two kidnappings.

Demonstrations broke out in 16 counties, the police using living ammunition, rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons.

Ms. Shamdasani also noted reports on the looting and destruction of public and private property in several places.

    Climbing crisis

This week’s violence follows the deaths of 15 demonstrators and hundreds of injuries during Demonstrations on June 25 in Nairobi and elsewhere.

These demonstrations were initially triggered by the anniversary of the anti-fiscal demonstrations of last year, which left at least 60 deaths and dozens that would have removed the police.

The demonstrations marked the 35th anniversary of the demonstrations of Saba Saba in 1990 on Monday, which paved the way for multipartite democracy in Kenya.

    Call for responsibility

Shamdasani said that the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, ” Reports his appeal to all reported murders and other alleged violations and abuse of international human rights law, including with regard to the use of force, to be investigated quickly, in depth, independent and transparent.“”

She noted that Kenyan police announced an investigation into June 25 incidents and added that the United Nations Human Rights Office is ready to support national authorities in their efforts, including surveys.

She stressed that by virtue of international law, the police can only use the deadly force strictly necessary to protect the life of an imminent threat.

The High Commissioner Türk also renewed his call for calm, restraint and full respect for rights to freedom of expression, the association and the Pacific Assembly.

“” It is essential that the legitimate grievances behind these manifestations are discussed“Said Ms. Shamdasani.
